EMOTIONAL DOGS: FRAGMENTS AND FLASHBACKS
The audiovisual exhibition EMOTIONAL DOGS — Fragments and Flashbacks is the result of a two-year creative journey by Penelope Morout, inspired by Bessel van der Kolk’s book The Body Keeps the Score. Through personal experience, Morout explores trauma as a break in our stories and as a disruption of bodily movement. The work connects ideas from philosophy, neuroscience and psychology.
Together with interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker Fenia Kotsopoulou, Morout transforms the concepts of trigger and flashback into visual and kinetic experiences. Each flashback appears as a surreal world, such as the Woman-Chair, the Diver or the Aquarium Roller Coaster. These moments interrupt the flow of the narrative. At the same time, each trigger enters like a radio frequency: a sound, a voice, a song or an image.
The exhibition combines digital and analogue technologies, including 35mm photography, Super 8 film and cyanotype. Through these different media, it creates a sensory environment that moves between reality and imagination.
Visitors are invited to explore a living landscape of videos, drawings, photographs, poetic texts, sounds and objects. These elements emerged from the creative process of the homonymous performance and continue to unfold as traces of memory.
Ultimately, EMOTIONAL DOGS explores memory and transformation through the body. It is a journey through the traces of trauma, where the body expresses, remembers and finds new ways to relate to experience.
